VLC 3.0 disponibile per tutte le piattaforme: supporto per HDR, video 360° e Chromecast su Android (foto)

Dopo anni di attesa, arriva finalmente la nuova versione 3.0 del lettore multimediale VLC, la prima del nuovo ramo di sviluppo con nome in codice "Vetinari". Con questa versione tutte le varianti del software sono state sincronizzate e presentano ora lo stesso numero di versione, dunque l'aggiornamento è disponibile contemporaneamente per tutte le piattaforme supportate.

Trattandosi di un major update, le novità sono davvero tante e molto importanti, sia per le versioni desktop che per le app mobile. Trovate di seguito un breve riassunto di quelle più interessanti.

  • Attivazione di default della decodifica hardware anche per HEVC, con supporto a video 4K e 8K
  • Supporto per HDR e formati video a 10 bit
  • Supporto per video a 360° e Audio 3D
  • Attivazione audio passthrough per i codec audio 3D
  • Supporto di trasmissione su Chromecast anche per i formati non supportati nativamente
  • Compatibilità con menu Blu-Ray Java (BD-J)
  • Supporto alla navigazione per reti locali e NAS

In particolare, per il mondo Android ci sono alcune sorprese degne di nota.

Oltre al supporto Chromecast in versione beta, alla funzione picture-in-picture e al riconoscimento delle playlist, VLC è ora disponibile anche sulle piattaforme Android TV, Android Auto (con comandi vocali), Chromebook e Samsung DeX. Sono state anche ottimizzate le funzioni di eliminazione dei file, caricamente dei sottotitoli e di ricerca nei video.

Le nuove versioni di VLC 3.0 possono essere scaricate gratuitamente su Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS e tutte le altre piattaforme supportate dagli store ufficiali dei rispettivi sistemi o dalla pagina di download sul sito ufficiale, che trovate a questo indirizzo.

Changes between 2.2.8 and 3.0.0:

Platform support changes:
* 3.0.x will be maintained as a LTS (best-effort basis, mostly for security)
that will be the last working version for quite a few systems.

Indeed the 3.0.x branch will contain the last releases running on:
- Windows XP, Vista, and the servers equivalent of those Windows versions
- macOS 10.7, 10.8 & 10.9, iOS 7 & 8
- Android 2.x, 3.x, 4.0.x & 4.1.x
- Compilers before gcc 5.0 and clang 3.4, or equivalent

* For the 3.0 branch, please note:
* The Windows XP/2003/2003R2 support for VLC is now on a best-effort basis:
it should work, but not without limitations.
libVLC support for Windows XP is deprecated.
You _really_ should upgrade to a more modern Windows version!
* Windows Vista (all versions) without Platform Upgrade is not supported.
* 64bit version of VLC for Windows is recommended.
* Linux support requires now a kernel newer than 2.6.26.
* Mac OS X 10.6 support is now removed. You need OS X 10.7.

Core:
* Support network browsing for distant filesystems (SMB, FTP, SFTP, NFS...)
and rewrite the parsing of the media files and inputs
* Support keystores: fetch and store passwords securely (sic!) for common
